THE REASONS DOGS LICK EXCESSIVELY
It's common knowledge that dogs always lick their owners, the habit of licking dogs occurs if they are playing with their owners or when brought food.
This habit of licking a dog makes him feel comfortable, besides that he also licks to tidy up his fur.
However, if this excessively licking dog needs to be watched out for, here are the reasons why dogs curry favour excessively.
1. Pain
Licking can be one way to reduce the pain, if the dog always licks in the same area of the body continuously it means there may be something bothering him in the area.
2. Allergies
Itchy skin can also be one of the causes of dogs licking areas of his body continuously, checking the area for possible rashes or ticks. You can overcome this by bathing the dog using warm water to reduce rashes and itching.
3. Anxiety
Occasionally the dog will lick to relieve anxiety and that's normal. But if the dog is constantly licking, it can turn into obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or obsessive-compulsive behaviour.
Just like in humans, OCD in dogs is a form of mental disorder. This makes him take repetitive actions so as not to worry. Licking a carpet or blanket is an indication that indicates the behaviour is rooted in anxiety.
"OCD in pets is caused by stress. So it’s important to try to figure out the causes of environmental stress that make animals lick excessively,” said veterinarian Jennifer Freeman, DVM.
4. Dietary problems
Dogs have sensitive digestive systems. Licking can be an indicator of nausea or discomfort in his digestive system.
Many dogs are intolerant of grains, starch, and soybeans. Even eating chicken or beef can have a negative impact on dogs.
Talk to your vet about the right food for dogs. Remember, any changes to the dog's diet should be made gradually
However, for some puppies, the reason dogs overlick is just behavioural impulses. Plus, dogs lick people because they like us. Tasting our salty skin is one way dogs experience the world around them.
